Doug and I met 40 years ago when my husband, John, brought a young Private, military medic, home and introduced us. Doug spent Christmas that year with us. John was leaving for a 6 month tour in the Golan Heights and asked Doug and another friend to help me out with our 2 small boys. Doug was true to his word and came over regularly to play with the boys. When I was sad and missing John, Doug came over and surprised me with a mid winter bbq, on a charcoal bbg, dressed in shorts and no shirt…singing We’re having a heat wave…. . He made a snowman, with the boys, that was very lopsided, and they named him Fred. He took me to bingo every week and we often made, middle of the night, long trips to Yarmouth for coffee.
He again helped me for 6 months, when he and John were both posted in Germany and John had to return to Canada on course for 3 months.
John and I are proud godparents to Danni and Doug was the proud Godfather to our daughter, Andrea.
Doug and my friendship grew from there. We saw each other thru a lot of ups and downs. We shared everything. Our friendship was a bond no one could break and no one tried. We texted goodnight every night. He often brought a smile to my face and always made me laugh. He was the best, best friend that ever was.
