Uncle Joe picked me up from the airport at the city of the Summer Olympics (Montreal) on an early morning of July, 1976. I was 10 then. He showed me the ropes of his boat and of the English language, that helped me continue the family passion for sailing and later on, to start a new life in the United Kingdom. I remember reading with him the children’s book “The story of Ferdinand”, the bull who wouldn’t fight. Coming from Spain and watching bullfights on TV all the time, I found the book particularly hilarious. Later on, as a Veterinary Surgeon, I understood why bulls prefer to peacefully graze in the fields. Joe and his wife Jenny transpired love throughout like true temporary adoptive parents and established the basis for a strong bond with the Fern Family and with Canada, that lasts to this day, and will stay in my heart.
