Obituary of Glenn Edward Warner
WARNER, Glenn Edward - June 20, 1938 to December 10, 2018
Glenn Edward Warner passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, December 10th, surrounded by family, at Kingston General Hospital. Glenn was 80 years old. Son of Glenn Reid and Helen (Harty) Warner, brother of Marguerite Warner, Helen (Ken) Porteous, and James Warner. Loving and dedicated husband of 53 years to Margo (Coppin) Warner; proud and loving father of Maggie and Glenn C. (Mona); well-loved grandfather of Jack. Glenn is predeceased by his daughter Kristin.
Hailing originally from Fort Frances, ON, Glenn was a respected presence in the Kingston business community for the past 30 years. After completing five years of service in the RCAF, stationed in France, Glenn returned to Canada in 1962 and began his career in the finance sector. He went on to build a group of moving and storage companies in various Ontario communities, while also serving as a small business counselor for the Business Development Bank of Canada. Glenn first purchased Walker’s Van & Storage in Deep River in 1980, and expanded it to North Bay in 1989. After purchasing Capital Movers & Storage in Kingston and Trenton, ON (1987), Glenn formed the Walker’s/Capital Group of Companies in 1996. He later opened an office furniture installation division of the group (Consolidated Office) in Kingston - a division that has since expanded to Ottawa, ON. Glenn served as a director of United Van Lines (Canada) Ltd. from 1989-1994 and 1999-2007.
A Paul Harris Fellow, Glenn was a member of the Rotary Club of Kingston for many years, serving as President in 1996-1997. He served on various boards including the Deep River Police Commission (past chair) and the Providence Care Foundation. He enthusiastically supported the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area and RKY Camp.
Glenn believed in living life to the fullest and was ever in pursuit of new challenges. His favourite place was atop a snowy mountain, ready to drop into a double-black diamond or daunting glade run. If not skiing, he could be found seeking fair winds in his sailboat, Mantayo. Glenn enjoyed golfing with friends in Kingston, at Mt. Tremblant, or the south, and was an avid curler for many years, travelling to Scotland with the Rotary team. He and Margo explored the east and west coasts of Canada, the ski slopes of Austria, and the deserts of the southwestern United States during many trips.
As confident and adept signing a business deal as he was renovating the family home, skippering his boat across Lake Ontario, or building a treehouse for his children and later, grandson, Glenn was a true family man and will be deeply missed. His passing came much too soon and his to-do list remains unfinished. His pioneering spirit and thirst for adventure will be carried on by his family in many of their future pursuits.
A small family visitation was held December 11, 2018 at the James Reid Funeral Home. In accordance with his wishes, Glenn was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held in the new year to mark Glenn’s passing and remember shared experiences with hearty laughter, tales of adventures past, and of course, good scotch.
Donations in Glenn’s memory are appreciated and may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area and to UHKF (Kingston Health Sciences Centre - Intensive Care Unit).
