John "Stuart" Hamilton passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday November 24, 2018 at the age of 78, in Kingston, Ontario Canada. His final moments and days were surrounded by friends and family. He is survived by his wife Gwen (McEwen), son Kevin (Julie), granddaughters Scotia, Charlotte and Molly, his sisters Angela MacDonald and Jacqui Walker (Bob), and his sister in-laws Joyce and Karen. Also his canine companion Lilly.
Stu was born in Kandahar, Saskatchewan, the son of Jock and Rose Hamilton. He grew up in the rural Quill Lake region which always provided him a foundation through which to look at life. Stu left his family to join the Canadian Army's Boy Soldier program when he was 16 and was eventually trained as a surveyor. Later he left the Army and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Discip stationed with 2 Manning Depot in St Jean, Que and RCAF station Borden. After unification he was retrained as an Admin clerk and served with the Department of Flight Safety Ottawa, CFB Winnipeg, reserve units in Hamilton, Ont, and numerous units in Kingston, Ont. His final working days were as a Commissionaire in Kingston, Ont. He was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 56 years.
An avid sports fan and participant from a young age, Stu was active in hockey, football, baseball, curling and golf. He was also a part time hockey referee and officiated numerous military tournaments, OHL, WHA and pre-season NHL games.
While he will be deeply missed, Stu's strong character and opinions will forever enrich the lives for who those were privileged to share his company. The family invites you to attend an informal celebration of his life at LEGION BRANCH 631, Collins Bay, on Friday, November 30 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Kingston Humane Society or the Legion Poppy Fund, in Stu's memory.
