I first met Matt shortly after I was hired with MTO in 1988. I was young and unsure and he was very welcoming and friendly and we had a good discussion about my first assignment in the Construction Office, which was to be in Bancroft. He made a positive impression that influenced my start I never forgot. One time I remember Matt being brought into an issue related to smoking in the field office, which was quite controversial in the day. My supervising engineer (not mentioning any names) had me keeping track of who was smoking where and I recall Matt wasn't too thrilled at having to deal with it!!. After Matt's retirement we played volleyball for many years at a downtown Kingston school gym. Positive memories. My sincere condolences to Matts family.

When I graduated from Queens with my Civil Eng degree in 1979, I was offered a position with MTO in Northern Region . I was told to report to Matt Bernhardt , Manager of the Constructuion Office in North Bay. Matt welcomed me to the ministry and gave me several “tips” for successfully navigating MTO. He was a most supportive mentor and would always remind me of that first encounter whenever we saw each other in later years , usually at a Kingston golf tournament. My condolences to Matt’s family.

He was very personable, easy going , well respected and well known throughout the ministry. He was always a gentleman.
