Dear Rev. Doug Henry Family, I am writing to send you my sincere condolences on the occasion of Doug's passing. I was a United Church student at McGill when Doug was there. I lived in the Anglican Residence, ate in the Presbyterian cafeteria and often attended the Presbyterian chapel services. Doug was a kindred spirit. I had (and have) so much respect for him.
I eventually married and my husband's family have a cottage on the Big Rideau. I tried to say Hi to Doug with him being at Westport, but I found out that Mrs. Henry had passed away and Doug had moved. I lost touch with him until I met up with Rev. Ian Johnston earlier this year for a funeral in Cornwall. He told me that Doug was still alive and gave me his number and address.
My husband, Craig, and I were able to visit him, - the same day we met a couple you there. Sorry, but after 35+ years I would not have recognized him. However, I expected him to say, "Alice, you haven't changed a bit." Instead he turned to my husband and said "Well, her voice sounds the same." I was so amused. Ha! Ha!
I am truly thankful we got to reconnect before Doug's transfer to his heavenly home. He served His Lord faithfully down here. He must have gotten such a welcome up there. I look forward to seeing him again.
I would like to have been at the service but we live in Chateauguay, a three hour drive to Kingston and I am still ministering down here. (Had a drama practise this morning) Saturdays are not the best days for making long drives for clergy. :-)
God bless you all, and may His peace and comfort be with you.
Sincerely,
Rev. Alice (Fraser) McAlpine
