My sympathies to you ALL. Grace was a great lady that help me when I was in a wheelchair. She gave my a shove(literally into the Pool) the very first time I met her. Grace & I always kept in touch by mail or when I was home from Calgary. Stuart I remember you from L.C.V.I. Your Mom will be fondly remembered by all, especially me! Swim with the swimming ANGELS Grace. You are know with you beloved hubby! R.I.P. too you both, until we meet again. Jackie

Dear Joan, Stuart, Bob and Family: We have been so blessed to have Grace and Don as our neighbours. They were our community and we will miss them always. Graces's wit, memory, political interest, and knowledge of current events kept us on our toes. We often left her home with a sense of really needing to try and keep up with her. Of course, the butter tarts helped to ease our sense of inferiority! It hurts to know she is no longer just across the street. Our thoughts are with you as you embark upon this new phase of your family life.

Dear Robert, Joan, Stuart and families, We were sorry to read of your dear Mom's passing. We really enjoyed meeting Grace a few times at your parents' home when we travelled back for reunions. (My husband, Bob had Don as a prof - Queen's Engineering '83 and worked with him on QUESSI. Bob really valued the mentorship and friendship he had with your Dad). We have a lovely card framed and hanging in our home that your parents sent when we got married in 1985. May the love you have shared as family bring you all comfort and support at this time.

Dear Joan, Bob and Hamish, I am in Delhi and just heard of Grace's death. I know that you, your kids and the next generation will miss her terribly--she was one of a kind, with her wry humour, practical approach to life and legendary baking skills. We make her chocolate chip shortbreads, aka "Amazing Graces" every year, but never match hers. Love, Meejum

I love the photo of Grace in today,s Globe but of course am saddened that she is gone. She and Don were lifesavers to me in my first real job after library school. Stuck in the basement of Douglas Library at Queens cataloguing government documents was not my ideal job and being away from my family and friends in Toronto meant loneliness. My solution? Invite myself to dinner at the Heydings! Clever and lucky me as they were the kindest funniest “ in loco parentis” I could have imagined. Poor Stuart had to put up with my loquaciousness though. Best memories? Grace getting her new teeth and going through many gallon jugs of cheap sherry to dull the pain. And I loved her use of Birks boxes to wrap presents ( not from Birks) for her unsuspecting friends. Lucky family to have had Grace ( And Don) as your role models. My sincerest condolences to you all, especially Bob, my friend from library school. Liebes Austin

My memories of you, Mrs. Heyding, go back almost 60 years. Always welcoming, you would provide cake and cookies to Bob and me while we were watching Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings play hockey on a Saturday night. I was so enamoured of your wonderful single pan cake that I asked for the recipe when we moved away from Rothwell Heights. I made it frequently but, alas, have not done so in recent years. However, that single page in my handwriting is still with me entitled "Mrs. Heyding's Cake". I will never forget your many kindnesses. With loving thoughts, David Johnson
