Obituary of Annie Gladys Elaine Meurling

MEURLING,  Annie G. E., R.N.
Peacefully at Kingston General Hospital on Friday, May 26, 2017, after a brief illness.  Annie Gladys Elaine (affectionately known as Dolly), was born in 1925 to Ralph Louis Wilson and Gladys Wiggins and eldest sister of Jim, Gertie and Jean.  Mumma was raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she trained as a nurse at Victoria Public Hospital and met and married Alric Meurling.   Their life was full of love and laughter and saw the foundation of a family dynasty with five children: Mary Ellen MacLean (Brian), Catherine Farrell, Janice DeBoer (Dirk), John (Susan), and Sara (Ted Kaiser) followed by  thirteen grandchildren and  sixteen great-grandchildren. Mumma is considered by her family to be one of the most amazing women of all time.  She was a dedicated and talented nurse, a kind, generous and caring mother whose heart opened to anyone who needed her. Decades of collecting and looking after ‘strays’ (friends, friends of friends, kids, patients, animals) created a huge circle of love. She always had an ear to pour your troubles into and a shoulder to cry on and a wise way of offering just what you needed when you needed it. (There was always a spare Christmas sock that she could fill or another basket found from the Easter bunny).  She was a voracious reader and completer of crossword puzzles, gardener and community volunteer.  She loved to laugh and was not above a practical joke.  But when her eyebrow went up, you needed to correct that behaviour. Daddy was her soulmate.  Together they raised children while moving across the continent.  After his retirement from the Royal Canadian Air Force, they settled in Kingston, Ontario where they became extremely active as members of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and in the local Rameses Shrine.  Mumma retired from nursing from Ongwanada. They enjoyed travel, visitors and were the centre of the extended Meurling clan. Mumma has gone to meet Daddy and we know they will be dancing. Funeral Services are Monday, May 29 at 2:00 pm., at ST. PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 137 Queen Street (at Montreal), Kingston ON.  Private family interment at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice, Mumma believed in the value of simple kindness.
