Obituary of Dorothy Anne Ross Geiger
GEIGER, Dorothy Anne (née Ross)
September 28, 1929 – May 17, 2017
It is with sadness but joy for Dorothy’s 87 years that her family announces her sudden passing at Kingston General Hospital. Predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth (Paul), and her son Stephen (Julia), she is survived by her children Hugh (Sheelagh), Kathy, Janet (Laurie) and Laura. Dorothy will be especially missed by her 10 grandchildren Erin, Heather, Alexander, Ross, Malcolm, Winton, Sophie, Olivia, Isabel and Thomas.
Dot was a remarkable woman who lived a remarkable life. From her love of teaching and dedication to public education to her conservation efforts and successful fight to preserve the Kingston waterfront for public access, she was always ahead of her time. Born in Toronto, she spent summers on the beach at Port Elgin, Ontario. She attended Victoria College at U of T and obtained her teaching certificate at OISE. She taught in Smooth Rock Falls, Collingwood and the Kingston area. After obtaining her Masters of Education at Queen's University, she was an Associate Professor at the McArthur School of Education.
Our Mom lived life to the fullest with a passion for gardening, bridge, genealogy, Scottish Country Dancing, canoeing and hiking. Her love of the arts was expressed in her paintings, crafts, and music. Some cherished memories are dancing wildly as she ripped through Mozart’s Turkish March on piano, or as she led us all in square dancing parties at the cottage on the St. Lawrence calling “dive for the oyster, dig for the clam”.
As the centre of frequent and noisy family gatherings she set an example for her children by applying the same energy and determination to producing backyard maple syrup, supporting the Kingston Historical Society and fighting for social justice. Dot had many dear friends, and we will all miss her terribly.
Visitation on Sunday May 28th at the James Reid Funeral home (1900 John Counter Blvd.) from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm. Funeral service Monday May 29th at 11 a.m., Chalmers United Church (212 Barrie Street). Luncheon reception to follow.
