Obituary of Dr. Margaret Lois Hooey
MARGARET LOIS HOOEY
Margaret passed away peacefully on January 13, 2017 at Providence Manor in Kingston. Beloved daughter of Dr. Lawrence and Tilly Hooey, she was born on September 18, 1935 and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. Treasured sister of Richard (deceased), Mary Ann, and Douglas (deceased). She has eleven nieces and nephews who dearly loved her.
Margaret had a long and distinguished career at Queen’s University, rising to become Secretary of the University as well as Secretary of its Board of Trustees and Senate. She was instrumental in shaping Queen’s modern governance system and an effective advocate for its unique form of student government. For her dedication to Queen’s and its many communities, Margaret received Queen’s Distinguished Service Award [1992], The John Orr Award [1998], and an Honorary Doctorate [2002].
Her home was always active with family, students, colleagues and friends. Margaret was a talented piano player, was well travelled and had a lifelong love of music. She enjoyed summers on the water and her faithful corgi companions. Margaret will be remembered for her abundant generosity, kindness and joie de vivre and will be deeply missed.
We would like to express our appreciation to Shireen Tennant and the caregivers at Providence Manor for their support and friendship to Margaret.
A celebration of Margaret’s life is being planned for Tuesday afternoon January 17th between 2-4 pm at Queen’s University Club, 168 Stuart Street in Kingston. Underground parking is available near the bottom of University Avenue. If so wished, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
