Obituary of Kurt Leopold Bachofer
Kurt Leopold Bachofer 1933 - 2016
Kurt Bachofer passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 5, 2016, at Kingston General Hospital with Helen, his soul mate of 62 years, at his side.
Kurt was born January 2, 1933, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, son of Katharina and Alfred Bachofer. He is survived by his brother Eric (Rae) and niece Katherine (Harry). Kurt will be sadly missed and ever remembered by family and the many close friends who were touched by his life.
Kurt immigrated to Canada in April 1952 settling in Kingston, Ontario. He had a long and successful career as a Mechanical Designer/Draftsman, first in Kingston with Drever & Smith and later, in Toronto, from 1964 to retirement. Kurt returned to Kingston in 2013.
Taught to play chess by his father at the age of four, Kurt remained a keen player throughout his life, participating in tournaments and taking up a game wherever he could. Kurt had a deep appreciation for the arts, literature, wilderness and nature. He was passionate about music and was a folk dancer with the Edelweiss Club of Toronto for many years. He was an active and dedicated member of Schlaraffia, a worldwide society committed to the arts, humour and friendship. Kurt enjoyed many years at his beloved cottage on Mosque Lake where the sounds of his accordion echoed through the woods and over the lake, often answered by the call of the loon.
A celebration of Kurt's life will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, on Wednesday October 12, 2016, with visitation from 10:00 - 11:30 am. A memorial service will follow in the chapel of the funeral home at 11:30 am, officiated by Reverend Andrew Johnston. For those who wish, donations in Kurt's memory may be made to the charity of your choice and would be greatly appreciated by the family.
