Obituary of Bessie Smith

SMITH, Bessie Phyllis Dorothy (Bassam) September 12, 1920-September 20, 2016 Passed peacefully at Fairmount Home, on September 20, 2016, at the age of 96. Beloved wife of the late David R. Smith for 72 years. Loving mother of Dianne Hathway (Richard). Dear grandmother of Ruth MacNeil (Malcolm), David van der Horden (Linda), Laura Maillie (David) and Eric van der Horden (Lori) and great grandmother of Melissa, Michael, Dianne, Peter, Ruby, Lila, Sarah, Caleb, Riley and Macey. Bessie was born in Ottawa, to Sarah and Henry Bassam. She is predeceased by her sister Hazel Bateman, and brothers Bill Bassam, Charlie Bassam and Albert Bassam (infant). Bessie and David had a wonderful life together - Scottish Country dancing, world travelers, avid campers and wine makers. Bessie worked at the Kingston Rape Crisis Centre for seven years. An expert seamstress, gardener, stamp collector, garage sale patron and homemaker. Thanks to the staff of Fairmount Home for their loving care for Mom for the last five years. They also took special care of the family members during Mom's final days. Thanks also to Mary, Kate, Glenda and Katie for their part in giving Mom companionship over the years. A service celebrating Bessie's life will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston. Interment at Cataraqui Cemetery. A reception will be held following the burial in the reception centre of James Reid. Memorial donations to Fairmount Home Building Fund or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
