Obituary of M. Joyce Smith

SMITH, M. Joyce

February 13, 1932 - June 23, 2023

Peacefully and surrounded by the love of her family, M. Joyce Smith passed away unexpectedly at Kingston General Hospital. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, Reginald W. Smith; devoted mother to Timothy (Marleen) and Wendy (Michael); grandmother to Kristen, Natalie and Nicholas; she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Born in Walsall, England, in 1932, she met her life-long partner at university and started a family before moving to Canada in 1968 when her husband joined Queen's University as a professor. As an admired high-school science teacher, she was one of the first groups in the education system to embrace the new age of computers. Joyce and Reg had the opportunity to travel internationally and had wonderful long-lasting friendships on every continent. While travel was a big part of her life, she especially enjoyed her time with family and friends at her home in Kingston, the farm in Inverary, and Brimfield cottage in the UK. After retiring, she joined the Seniors Association and was an active volunteer for over 25 years. At the Seniors Centre and her local neighbourhood, she routinely connected with a gregarious group of friends to enjoy exercise classes, play scrabble for the afternoon, go for walks, and engage in many other fun events.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, Ontario, on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 11:00am. Immediately following the service, all are invited for a reception and refreshments at the same location in the Reception Centre.

In recognition of the great work and support provided by the Kingston Seniors Association and the exceptional care provided by the health-care team at Kingston General Hospital, the family asks that donations in memory of Joyce Smith be made to the Kingston Seniors Association or the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.
