Obituary of Gil Pierog
PIEROG, Gilbert Captain (Retired) CD2, SSM. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert (Gil) Pierog surrounded by his family, on June 11, 2023, at the age of 79. Predeceased by his beloved wife Beverly (nee Martin). Loving father to Cathy Vandegraaf (Paul), Jason Pierog (Romney) and Jamie Pierog (Brenda). Cherished PAPA to grand-children Meaghan, Ian, Marissa, Mark, Myles, Graham, and Aiden. He will be sadly missed by his sister, travel companion and bowling partner Kathleen. Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to the late Evelyn and Eddie Pierog, Gil enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1961. Gil served in Germany, Kingston, Ottawa, Dartmouth N.S, Petawawa, and Rockland before settling back in Kingston with Bev and retiring from the Princess of Wales Own Regiment (PWOR) in 1998. Gil continued to serve with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in Kingston for another 18 years. Gil retired after 55 years of uniformed service. In recent years Gil thoroughly enjoyed travelling with his family and spending time with his 7 grandchildren. He was always planning his next adventure. Gil was an active member of the PWOR association and the ANAF Veterans club where he had many friends and was a fixture in their local Pool League.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Toronto General Hospital for their compassion and care during Gil’s time there. A celebration of life will be held at the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, RECEPTION and CELEBRATION CENTRE, 1900 John Counter Blvd on Saturday June 24th, from 2-4 pm. Words of remembrance to be spoken at 3pm. (Please enter the Reception Centre from the rear parking lot). In lieu of flowers please send any donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or OSPCA.
