Obituary of Beverley McKellar

We are very saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our mother Beverley Carole Ann McKellar in her 90th year on June 11, 2023.

Cherished by her sons Greg (Mary Jean) and Steve (Teresa) as well as her husband James of 68 years and grandsons Dylan and Kyle. Lovingly remembered by her sister Suzanne King and nephew Christopher who always held a special place in her heart, along with Magen and Wendy. Greatly missed by brother-in-law Arch McKellar and sister-in-law Marie McKellar with whom she had a special bond. Predeceased by her parents Bernadette and Ted Smith, brother Colin, sister Barbara and step-father Spence.

Mom lived a long and remarkable life. Born in Ottawa and having grown up in Brockville, she travelled all over the world with her husband and enjoyed numerous amazing vacations. She was an accomplished duplicate bridge player, achieving Life Master status at a young age. Her proudest accomplishment was returning to school in her 50’s and earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University, joining her sons and other family members as graduates of that renowned learning institution.

Mom’s finest achievement, however, was instilling solid core values in her children, teaching us the importance of acceptance of others regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or any of the other factors that sadly serve to divide so many in this world. For that, we are truly grateful beyond measure.

In her later years, despite the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease, mom continued to enjoy many of life’s simple pleasures: good food and wine, chocolate, gardening, music, dancing and hiking. Her will to live and persevere was remarkable and relentless.

We wish to thank the wonderful staff at Briargate for their dedication to mom the past three years, especially Jesse, Janet and Bill, who are simply the best. Additional thanks to the staff at Kingston General Hospital on Kidd 6 for taking care of mom near the end.

Mom is resting at James Reid Funeral Home on John Counter Blvd in Kingston. Funeral service will follow cremation and will be held on Tuesday, June 20 at 1:00 pm at James Reid Funeral Home, with a short reception after. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Kingston.
