Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Mitchell

Mary Mitchell

It is with profound sadness that we announce the recent passing of Mary Elizabeth Mitchell at Providence Care Hospital after an enduring battle with cancer. Surrounded by her husband and three children, Mary passed away on June 7th, 2023.

Loving wife of Richard, and a dedicated mother to Laura (James), Andrew (Julianne) and Heather (Scott). Beloved daughter of the late Randolph and Lola Gourdier and sister to Margie (Mike), Marilyn (Derek) and Bill (Janet). A caring aunt to many nieces and nephews and proud grandmother to her five grandchildren: George, Pierce (Andrew) and Ruby, Mitchell, Cooper (Heather).

A preventative dental assistant by profession, Mary prioritized the care of children, characterized by her career in dental health promotion and education. Outside of work, Mary loved spending time on her beautiful garden, swimming in her backyard pool, and playing nine holes with Richard. Mary will be remembered for the warm atmosphere she created in her home, her classic beauty and love for her family.

Thank you to the healthcare professionals who worked tirelessly to provide best-in-class care to Mary including the neuro-oncology team at KHSC, the palliative medicine team at Queen’s University, the Saint Elizabeth healthcare nurses and most recently the multidisciplinary team on Heritage 2 at Providence Care Hospital. We are forever grateful to Cindy Ryckman, Mary’s primary caregiver and friend who honourably maintained Mary’s home healthcare wishes.

A funeral will take place at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kingston on Thursday, June 15th, 2023 at 10:00am.

In lieu of flowers and meals, donations can be made to The Food Sharing Project in Mary’s name, a local initiative designed to ensure school-aged children have access to nutritious meals.
