It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Elia Zureik, beloved husband to Mary, devoted father to Michael (daughter Jordan) and Mariam (Darryl/son Zachary).
Born in Akka, Palestine, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 19 to pursue his education after losing his father and mother. In San Francisco, he met Mary while they were completing their undergraduate degrees. He completed his PhD at Essex University in England and in 1971 joined the Department of Sociology at Queen's University in Kingston where he raised his family.
Elia shared his passion for the Middle East and travel with Mary and his children, taking them to many countries. His love for his grandchildren could be seen during holidays and important family events, even as his health deteriorated. His knowledge, humor, sarcasm, and strong sense of family provided countless fond memories that will remain forever.
His life's journey has ended, but his legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and academic work. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to justice and peace in the Middle East. May he rest in peace.
