Obituary of Shirley Catherine May Hulley
Shirley Catherine May HULLEY
May 04, 1937 - December 30, 2022
Shirley Hulley passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2022 at Fairmount Home, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. We struggle to find the right words at this time to truly describe our mother, they seem inferior to the person for whom she was to so many. As a mother to us children growing up, she was like Mother Nature, taking us on hikes in the woods, teaching us both love and respect of nature, while at the same time instilling within us the values of respect, integrity, perseverance and the right to stand up for what you believe in. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, she was not someone you had to look up to, as she would often be at your level, on the floor playing with you, drawing, colouring or just messing around. As an only daughter, she was clearly her dad's girl and ensured her father enjoyed his latter years, with trips to Florida along with the Hulley family, and ensured there was compassionate care for her parents in their final days.
Shirley was music and art, as a child, the family could not afford a piano so she made a roll out paper keyboard to practice on. At ten years of age, while bedridden with rheumatic fever, she taught herself to draw and paint. This became a second career after retiring from the Limestone District School Board, and what a second career it was! She was commissioned to paint for a Princess as well as members of Parliament, and her work was displayed and sold in various galleries across Ontario.
Shirley graciously donated her work to so many charitable causes, such as Save the Children, the Parkinson's Foundation, Kingston Symphony, Food Banks, Kingston General Hospital, the Limestone District School Board and so many more. Her artwork is displayed in many private homes and collections, locally and internationally. Shirley's art, just like the love she shared with so many, will forever live on.
Shirley is survived by her four children Michael Hulley (Mavis), Linda Hahn (Barry), Susan Hulley (Neil), and Patrick Hulley (Beverley), her 5 grandchildren Courtney Rickards, Jessica Clowater, James Hahn, Joshua Hulley-Carroll, and Jordyn Hulley as well as her 5 great-grandchildren Gus and Reed Rickards, Gracie and Eli Clowater and Theo Hulley.
In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made in Shirley's name, specifically to the Activity Department, at Fairmount Home, 2069 Battersea Road. The family is grateful to the staff who provided comfort and care to Shirley over the years.
