Obituary of Gary Donald Medd
Gary Medd
1943 - 2022
Gary Donald Medd was born on February 9, 1943 to the late Donald and Marie Medd. He passed away on December 25, 2022 at Kingston General Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Joan (Theobald), his brother Allan (Abby), and his sons Andrew (Alyssa) and Graeme (Natasha), as well as his grandchildren, Braeden, Hannah, Nolan, Emmett and Tate.
Gary was an accomplished educator who touched the lives of many students and teachers in Ontario. Over the course of his 50-year career, he worked in a variety of positions from classroom teacher to principal in seven different schools including Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute, Sydenham High School and Bayridge High School. He also contributed to the field as a literacy consultant, co-author of educational textbooks, group leader for teacher courses and other work with the Ministry of Education. When he retired from the Limestone School District in 1999, he took on a liaison position in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University overseeing student teachers. In this role, Gary got to focus on what he loved most about the profession – working in classrooms with teachers and students.
At the age of 10, Gary played his first game of golf and it ignited a lifelong passion for the game. Golf was his respite, his stress-free zone where the only thing that mattered was getting along with the guys and having fun. Over the years, he played with a variety of different groups of guys including the Weston group and the Maloney crew who made annual trips to New York State. Golf games, small-time betting, trash talking, voodoo signs and fake sympathies were all part of the fun!
As per Gary’s wishes, there will not be a visitation or public service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.
