Obituary of Fred Everding

On the first day of autumn, September 22, 2022, Friedrich Werner Everding (Fred), departed peacefully. Fred almost made it to 91.

Born in Hannover, Germany in 1931, he became a specialized scientific instrument maker but, like many, he left the devastation of post-war Europe in 1956 seeking a better life in Canada. Without any knowledge of the language, he and his wife Erika learned English at night classes and by watching movies. After a few years in Toronto, they moved to Kingston where he worked in the Chemistry department at Queen’s University, followed by many years as a skilled and respected millwright until his retirement in 1991. It was in Kingston and in the Odessa area where they raised their three children - Uwe, Marty and Susie and later spent time with granddaughters Talia, Nicki, Mia, Robin and Emily.

Fred was a passionate soul: passionate about his wife of 65 years, Erika; his classical music; his whistling; his trees grown from seed and as seedlings; his ornamental blacksmithing; and, of course, collecting tools. We know that Canadian Tire is also mourning his passing.

Active and mobile to the end, Fred went walking in his much-loved Lake Ontario Park the evening before he left us - what a great way to finish his season.

Out of respect for Fred’s wishes, there will not be a formal service, but family and friends can look forward to celebrating his life at a later date. In Fred’s honour, the family invites you to make a donation to Lemoine Point Conservation Area through the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority.
