Obituary of Mary Carolyn Moore

Moore, Mary Carolyn (nee Askwith)

8 May, 1942 to 23 September 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Carolyn Moore following a brief but devastating illness on Friday, September 23rd, 2022. She was 80 years old. Mary was born in Luton, Bedfordshire in England.

In 1959, her family moved to Marlborough, Wiltshire, England where, at grammar school, she met David, her husband-to-be. They were married in 1965.

Mary graduated from Eastbourne Teacher Training College in 1963 and taught elementary school for five years, until she became a stay-at-home mom.

She is survived by her husband and soulmate David, their son Jonathan (Isabelle), daughter Caroline O’Neill (Stuart) and five adored grandchildren, Michael, Madison, Kaitlin, Alexandra and Sophia.

On emigrating to Canada in 1974, Mary wished to pick up teaching again but was informed that she needed a degree to do so. She enrolled at Queen’s University and obtained her BA in history. She then found that using her organizational and computer skills was more to her liking, leading eventually to a post at Queen’s School of Business.

In 1997, after the children had left home, she and David moved for five years to Farmington Hills, Michigan. Once Mary received her work permit, she found employment as office manager for a software company.

Both she and David retired in 2002 and returned to Kingston, enjoying condo life and especially their cottage on Whitefish Lake.

Over the years, Mary’s main passion was tennis, both playing and watching. Once her joints made this less appealing, bridge became a keen interest – also travelling, birdwatching and gardening. She was an active member of the Queen’s Women’s Association.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be an informal gathering for family and friends to remember Mary on Sunday, October 16, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the James Reid Reception Centre at 1900 John Counter Blvd in Kingston. Please enter at the back of the building

Grateful thanks are offered to the staff of the Eastern Ontario Cancer Centre and to the nurses and staff of Kidd 5, KGH.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice or to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.
