JOHN TAYLOR OBITUARY
TAYLOR, MD, FRCSC, DR. JOHN ROBERT
John was born April 28, 1939, in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, to Boyd and Dorothy Taylor. He passed away peacefully in his home, on April 20, 2022 - a week shy of his 83rd birthday. John is greatly missed by his wife Pat (Hutchinson) Taylor. Pat and John have three treasured children: Cathy, David and Peter. John is survived by his only sister Nancy alongside her husband Rodger and their children Robert, Leslie and Ian. John was beloved by all his extended family and especially cherished by four adoring granddaughters: Taylor, Anna, Maja and Isla - to them he was their one and only "Babo". Pat and John met at Sick Kids Hospital Toronto in 1963, where he was a medical intern and she was doing her pediatric rotation in nursing. It was love at first sight and they were soon married in 1965. As newlyweds they started their great adventure of 57 years together in medical practice in Apsley, Ontario and then travelling to Malaysia with Care Medico. They were true partners in all things including starting a private aesthetic surgery clinic in 1991. John's impact on the medical profession spanned five decades. A pioneering surgeon, he advanced the profession through his leadership as the President of the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery; President of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons; and Associate-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery, having co-founded the publication in 1992. As an educator, John held many positions including teaching countless medical Residents; Lecturer at the University of Toronto; and Examiner for the Medical Council of Canada. As a philanthropist, John contributed a wealth of knowledge and experience as Chairman of the Dr. A. Ross Tilley Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation; Trustee of the Guinea Pig Club in Canada; and as Medical officer of the Air Cadet 164 Squadron Shelburne. Resolved to advance his profession with greater integrity and accountability, John was Chairman for both the Canadian and American Ethics Committees of the ASAPRS as well as Chairman of the Canadian Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. While John pursued this work with determination and humility he was prodigiously acknowledged by his colleagues and country with the Queen Elisabeth II 25th Anniversary Medal; the Canadian Distinction Award; and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons. John was also an accomplished author (who enjoyed exchanging ideas with his daughter-in-law and author Cecilia), historian, musician, aviator and sailor and could routinely be found puttering around the vast workshop in his airplane hangar as well as enjoying golf, classic automobiles and British satire - especially Monty Python. In the last several years, and through the pandemic, John enjoyed his time with Probus and found great comfort with Fr. Daniel at St. Johns Anglican Church - especially "Zoom coffee time".
