Obituary of Joan Elizabeth Hopkins
Hopkins, Joan Elizabeth (nee Havey) – Passed away peacefully after a short illness with her family by her side at Kingston Health Sciences Centre at the age of 74. She is survived by her dear husband of 52 years Selwyn “Hopper” Hopkins whom she met while completing her B.A. Honours in English Literature at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
After finishing her B. Ed., she began her M.A., also from Acadia, and worked as a teacher for a few years in Greenwood, N.S.. When her children were born, she left the workforce to become a full-time homemaker.
She is survived by her children Jennifer Robinson (Jason) and Andrew Hopkins (Nancy). She is the beloved Grandma to Caden and Marcus and cherished sister to Margaret Havey and Harry Havey. She was predeceased by her mother Mildred Havey (nee Mader) whom she lost at an early age, as well as her father Clinton Havey and stepmother Doreen (nee Gillen).
She encouraged her children’s educational aspirations and was very intelligent with a sharp wit. She loved reading and debating topics of interest. She also dabbled in gardening and writing.
As per her wishes, she will be interred at the Havey family plot in Pinegrove Cemetery, Stewiacke, N.S. at a later date.
The family will be accepting visitors on Sunday, August 21, 2022, between the hours of 3:00 – 5:00 pm in the Reception Centre at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston. All are welcome to drop in to pay their respects. Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Joan’s honour.
