In the early morning hours of Friday, May 27 in the comfort of his home and with his wife of 29 years by his side, Doug Amos passed away after a brief illness.
His final days were spent with his devoted family, in person, or via video where distance made it impossible to be in the room together.
“Doogles” is survived by his wife, Angela, his daughters from his first marriage Jennifer and Julia, and his sons Christopher and Alexander, sons-in-law Shawn and Paul, daughter-in-law Adeline, and his six grandchildren, Noah, Fiadh, Sawyer, Joseph, Thomas, and Emma. Doug is survived by his siblings Duane, Lori, Lisa, Carl, Lynn, and Ken, and predeceased by his parents Alfred and Gail (Yorke). Much to his dismay, he is also survived by Jack the dog.
True to form, Doug met his health challenges head on, with a coffee in hand and grin on his face, his signature Ray-Bans, and maybe even a darkly humorous joke.
As long as his health allowed he continued pursuing the things he loved. A black belt since 2009, he ran the Cloverdale Judo Club and competed in tournaments when able, including the World Masters Tournament in 2010. Though Covid got in the way of his judo classes, he remained committed to his students and the discipline. His love of Judo was something he shared with his son, Chris, and his nieces and nephews. Doug was well-loved by parents and students alike at Cloverdale, often showing his youngest students his famous “flying scissors" and letting them throw their sensei. Doug also carried out the tradition in the judo club of doing push ups to match the number of years a pupil was to turn. He was no exception to the rule and easily accomplished 61 push-ups for his 61st birthday.
Doug’s characteristic sense of adventure had earlier led him to pursue scuba diving, eventually becoming a scuba diving instructor and accomplished underwater photographer throughout the 1980s and 90s.
In 2020, Doug put his many years of work experience towards one of his lifelong goals of going into business with his son, Chris, forming Amos Security Management.
A memorial will be held for Doug in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted by the Cloverdale Judo Club to help sponsor a scholarship for future judokas to come.
