Obituary of Jane Iris Larkin Youngson
Jane Iris Larkin Youngson (Grant)
1931 - 2021
Having just shared Christmas with family, Jane passed away in the early morning hours of December 27, 2021. She joined her husband, Douglas, of over 63 years, whom she missed dearly. She reunites with her parents George and Agnes (Kenneway) Grant and her brother John (long deceased) as well as dear departed friends and family.
Jane was proud of her Scottish heritage. She was a stoic example of the Grant Clan motto “Stand Fast”. She served as a WREN (Women’s Royal Navy) and became a committed military officers’ wife. She worked with the House of Commons for twenty years and was proud to have closely supported those including the Honourable Lester B. Pearson, Morris Foster, Judy Erola and ‘Status of Women’ as well as the Honourable Herb Gray. She retired with Douglas and moved to Germany where she created the Child and Family Services in Lahr to support young military families overseas. Upon their return to Canada, Jane volunteered in the hospital library and joined the May Court Club where she had great fun volunteering at the Bargain Box and helping at the hospice. She was a proud member of the Canadian Women’s Club. Jane and Doug both supported the Canadian Armed Forces especially RMC and all Ottawa Police Service gala activities.
Mom, mum, ma was proud of Grant (Christine), Tessa (Gilles), and Jennifer, and our service to community through the Canadian military and policing. Mom’s joy blossomed in her role as Grammie and most recently as Great-Grammie. She was fiercely proud of her grandchildren Alexandre (Marilyn), Mackenzie (Emily), Sydney, Maxwell, Zachary (Dom) and Delaney. She loved them unconditionally, celebrated and bragged about them and cherished time spent together. All will remember shared time at the cottages and in Florida.
Mom was pre-deceased by sister-in-law Helen Jean and loved by nieces Susan Turner, Margie Hewitt (Steve) and their children. Mom will also be missed by sister-in-law Merrall (Jerry Grossi), and nephews Jamie (Marion) and Anthony (Elissa).
Mom was delighted to expand her family and will be missed by Joanne (Steve Hall, deceased), Celine Larochelle, Caroline Despatis (Chris) and Jonathan Hall (Elianne).
Mom’s friends and their children will remember her fondly as time spent growing together as military families created lifelong bonds. Mom adopted our friends and their children as her own and will be missed by all who knew her.
Mom was a strong feisty woman who fought through significant medical challenges to remain part of our lives. She has inspired us to forge ahead and keep dreaming.
Mom imparted on her children and grand-children a drive to be curious, creative and adventurous through her stories of world travel, anecdotes about the people she’s met, and pictures of the places she’s been.
Arbour Heights has been a part of all our lives for many years. We have always appreciated the love and support of staff. We send thanks for all you did to help Mom. Online condolences can be left at www.jamesreidfuneralhome.com. Funeral service will be held at Beechwood Cemetery (DND) in Ottawa, Friday March 11, 2022 at 10 am. Donations can be made to the May Court Club Ottawa.
