Obituary of Roy Patrick Walmsley
ROY PATRICK WALMSLEY PHD
1936 - 2021
Passed peacefully at home on December 16.
Born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire he graduated in Physical Therapy along with his first wife, Margaret
(deceased) in Sheffield UK, at which time they emigrated to Canada in 1957. He worked as a therapist
at Hamilton Childrens Hospital until 1963, when they returned to Sheffield for extra qualfications.
In 1966 they resumed life in Canada to work at the University of Toronto. In 1967 Roy was recruited
to establish the Physiotherapy Programme within the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queens
University. He served as Head of the School for 3 decades. During that time Roy graduated with a
Bsc. Queens, Msc. Minnesota, PHD in Bio. Medical Engineering, Strathclyde, Glasgow (1994). He
Chaired the Discipline Committee of the College of Physiotherapists. Served Internationally as an
External Examiner. He also taught in Australia, Ukraine and Jamaica.
Roy is survived by his wife Pam, his sons, Paul (Judy), Mark (Carol), Grandsons, Trevor (Laura) and
Kyle. He was blessed with the arrival of his Great Granddaughter, Naomi in June.
Roy's retirement pursuits included extensive travel on the rivers of Europe, small ship cruising, and
birding in North and South America. He loved to play racquet sports, in particular, squash, badminton
and pickle ball. When not watching Manchester United Soccer, he might be playing Duplicate Bridge
or walking his dog, Sam.
