Obituary of Elaine Hammond

Florence Elaine Hammond (nee Breault) grew up on a farm in Manitoba learning thrift and independence. After school and Teachers’ College her life revolved around teaching and learning. After marriage to Allan, they lived in Quebec, New Brunswick (where Elaine taught), Alberta, PEI and Ontario. She graduated from UNB in Arts and Education.

When they moved to PEI her life as a writer began, in the course of which she published numerous short stories and five historic novels for middle schoolers.  She was a founding member of the PEI Writers’ Guild and was awarded Distinguished Contribution to the Arts on PEI Award.          

She initiated her family’s love of travel in the course of which she and Allan visited more than 20 countries, traveling on their own.

 Her love and commitment to family were unparalleled with son Rob (Shawn Gallagher), Greg (Carolyn Fawcett), daughter Julia (Kurtis Blackman ) and son Kirby (Karen Loeb). Grandchildren were always welcome.

Elaine died in Kingston at age 83.

A private burial has been held, and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled.   In remembrance, donations to the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship are appreciated.
