John Gerald Robert (Bob) Sutherland

June 7, 1925 – August 6, 2021

Kingston, Ontario

Born in Priceville, Ontario to Rev. Angus and Violet Sutherland. Predeceased by his parents, his siblings, Rev. Jamie Sutherland (Joyce), Rev. Laurie Sutherland (Elizabeth) and Monica (Alan Cameron). Survived by his sister Priscilla Mackenzie. Loving husband of 73 years to Charlotte (Lottie), Bob is survived by his children Rev. Angus Sutherland (Sandra), Rhona (Hugh Gale) and Ruth. Grandpa to Shona Sutherland (Jason Spencer), Rev. Bonnie Sutherland (Seth Veenstra), Struan (Nicole) and Grace Sutherland, Bryan Gale (Jen), Emily (Ian Kennedy) and Daniel Krawchuk (Amanda). Great-grandpa to Callum, Rowan, Cameron and Liam, Rachel and Matthew. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.

Bob was a World War II Navy Veteran. He met Lottie in Glasgow during the war and persuaded her to emigrate to Canada where they settled in Elora, Ontario. Then he worked for many years at Commercial Print Craft in Woodstock, Ontario, before retiring to Westport and eventually Kingston. With Lottie they owned and operated a Scottish Import business in Woodstock and later in Westport, along with a Scottish tea room.

Bob was the author of some beautiful poetry as well as 15 published young adult novels. He enjoyed travelling to elementary schools across the country talking about his award-winning books.

Bob was always very involved in his church. He was an elder, Sunday School teacher, choir member and youth group leader in Knox Presbyterian in Woodstock and also in Knox Presbyterian in Westport.

The family would like to thank the staff of Arbour Heights and Kidd 6, Kingston General Hospital for their care and compassion.

Funeral arrangements are through James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, Ontario.
Family and friends are invited for visitation on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm or 7:00 – 9:00 pm. All are welcome. Covid protocols will be in place, masks are required while inside the Funeral Home and social distancing will be observed.
There will be a service in the chapel on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 11:00 am. Space is limited, if you would like to attend in person, please call to book a seat at 613-544-3411 between 9:00 – 5:00. All others are invited to join the service by livestream by clicking here to register.
Interment will take place in McNeil Memorial Cemetery in Priceville, Ontario at a later date.

Memorial Donations can be made to Presbyterian World Service and Development in Bob’s honour.
