Obituary of Doris Mary Strong
STRONG, (DORIS) MARY
August 15 1928 – July 6 2021
Mary died peacefully at home beside her love Peter just five days after celebrating 71 years of marriage.
Born in Nottingham England to William and Doris Green, the eldest of five children, she was predeceased by siblings Phyllis, Ralph, and Dennis, and is fondly remembered by brother Jack.
Mary and Peter were married July 1 1950 in Nottingham, one year later Christine was born, with daughter Pamela following five years later, the same year they emigrated to Canada. They settled in Kingston close to Peter’s family and in 1964 Janet was born.
Mary worked at home sewing, with loyal repeat customers who respected her skills and talent. The family benefitted with a stay-at-home Mum, with her skills in the kitchen, cooking, baking, canning. For many years a vegetable garden kept her and Peter busy in the summer.
After Peter retired they enjoyed travelling together, often to England to be with family, but visited most of Canada, with several trips to the Maritimes, a favourite of theirs.
In later years Mary would always be found in her reclining chair with either a book, or crossword in hand, or watching her tv shows – usually something British. Unfortunately dementia took that away from her and for the last two years Peter has been a loving caregiver with much help from the St. Elizabeth Society nurses and PSWs. The family would like to thank Helen Lott and her partner Bill for their kind assistance during this time.
She is sadly missed by husband Peter, Christine and Ian Devonshire, Pamela and Rick Dlugokecki, Janet Strong (Pat McLaughlin d.2015).
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Heather Devonshire-Kingma & Doug, Jacob Gossage and Lacey Gossage; James Devonshire; Scott Devonshire & Lesley Burnette, Avery, Miles and Alexa; Alex & Erika Dlugokecki, Gillian, Henry and Cassidy; Sam Dlugokecki.
Peter’s siblings Joyce Johnston, Monica Brown, Mike and Rowena Strong. Predeceased by sisters-in-law Kathleen Milligan and Eileen Lunn. Remembered by nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and the UK.
A private family service will be held in the chapel of James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Boulevard, on Saturday July 10 2021 with Reverend Andrew Chisholm officiating, For those not attending the private ceremony, the funeral ceremony will be livestreamed.
