It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Amal Sen, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, on Monday, May 24, 2021.  Amal, loving husband of 58 years to Haimanti Sen.  Cherished father of Smita Sengupta and her husband Sandip, and proud grandfather of Neil and Serena Sengupta.  Amal was predeceased by his parents, Sidartha and Usha Sen, and by his four brothers and three sisters.  He will be sorely missed by his family and friends in India, and around the world. He will be remembered by his special friends at The Deerfield who have been part of his extended family for the last 30 years.

Amal truly enjoyed life and never had any regrets.  He was revolutionary for his time, teaching his daughter to be fearless, and instilling the importance of women’s rights, at a time when women had few societal rights in India.  He traveled often, around the world, and his sense of humour helped him to create lifelong friendships with the people he met along the way.

Education was very important to Amal.  He earned two degrees - B. Comm. from University of Calcutta and M. Com. from University of Allahabad, and was a professional accountant. When his mother died, he started a charity in her name to offer underprivileged children a chance to obtain an education in her hometown. He ensured that his daughter had the best possible education overseas.  He taught himself the newest technologies and loved using his iPhone to keep in touch with family and friends around the world.

Family for Amal was the most important part of his life.  In addition to devoting himself to his wife and daughter, he was always present to help any of his relatives in times of need and he helped raise his two grandchildren.  His heart was one that could give selflessly and his love was never ending. 

Community, arts and sports were a big part of Amal’s life. He had an interest and love for Bengali arts and culture. In his spare time, he wrote and recited Bengali poetry. He donated his time and money to many charities. He was active in tennis and was a Senior’s billiards champion.

In keeping with Amal’s wishes and beliefs, a cremation and private Hindu ceremony has taken place at the James Reid Funeral Home.  The family would like to thank the Hindu Temple of Ottawa-Careleton and the priest, Dhavalkumar Purohit, who conducted the ceremony.
