1925 - 2021
At age 96, David J. Day passed away peacefully in Kingston General Hospital on Monday, May 17, 2021. David was predeceased by his first love and wife June (nee Stuart), and younger brother James. Left to remember David is his second wife of 17 years Bernice (nee Abrams), brother Dick (Sheila; first wife Betty (deceased)), sons Bruce (Pam), James (Kim), and Michael, as well as grandchildren Stuart (Cathryn), Brendon (Pamela), Darren, and five great-grandchildren Erin, Cameron, Lauren, Matthew and Ryan. He is also survived by brother James’ wife Maureen, Bernice's children Karen (John), Paul (Karen) and extended family.
David was a humble man for whom family was everything. Quick witted with a dry sense of humour and infectious laugh, David was the ultimate gentleman who always lent a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
Kingston born and raised, David joined the military straight out of high school (Kingston Collegiate) in Oct 1942 to serve overseas as a trooper in the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards in WWII until the end of the war. Returning to Kingston, David attended Queens University where he met his young love (Elsie June Stuart) and graduated Class of '49. David then followed in his father's footsteps, joining Sun Life in 1949. His career with Sun Life spanned more than half a century retiring in 2001.
With the passing of his first wife June in 1999, he was eager to travel and on an arranged blind date in 2003 at Chez Piggy's, he met Bernice. Together they travelled extensively until finally settling down at his home in Kingston.
Throughout his adult life he was engaged in many community-focussed organizations. A Kingston Rotarian for over 40 years, he always had a special place in his heart for RKY Camp on Eagle Lake that he first attended as a camper in 1934. His love for Eagle Lake was so deep that he purchased property and built a cottage there in 1959. This remained his sanctuary and favourite place on earth for 62 years.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the many Community Health Providers and to Veterans Affairs for their support in allowing him to remain at home and independent for his final years. A special thanks to KGH's Medical Short Stay Unit (MSSU) for their outstanding care and support to David and the family in his final days.
