Obituary of Thomas George Reynolds

REYNOLDS, Thomas George

M.S.W., Ph. D. (Psychology)

1947 - 2021

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that the family and friends of Dr. Tom Reynolds announce his passing on Monday, March 29th, on the Palliative Ward at Providence Care Hospital, Kingston, ON.

After a long brave battle with Cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis B, Tom passed to another realm to be with his Mother, Eileen Audrey (Purdy) and his Father, Keith Hubert Reynolds, and many family members and friends who predeceased him and helped pave the way for him to join them in a place without illness, pain and concern.

He leaves behind to grieve and ultimately celebrate his remarkable life, his life partner of 45 years, Tom Sparling, his brother Jim Reynolds (Doug Reid), sister Sheri Reynolds , niece Kate (Matt Flowers), great nephew William Flowers, their fur baby Lucy, longtime family friend Patti Clinch; as well as other extended family and many friends.

TR’s passion for reading, was surpassed only by his love for theatre, movies, the intimate life of Hollywood celebrities and travel, especially by train!

Tom had a professional passion for the exploration of mental health in the context of families and organizations. Apart from his work with many Toronto social service agencies including Children’s Aid, Integra and Aisling Centre he served on boards for the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH) and Fife House, where he chaired a major Capital Campaign that raised $1.1M for the new Sherbourne Street Housing facility.

In the corporate world, he managed Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) at Warren Shepell Inc. (now Morneau Shepell) and the Bank of Montreal. Following this employment, he provided clinical, executive coaching and organizational development consulting services to many corporations, agencies and individuals including the Michener Institute, Mercer Consulting, Fife House Foundation, Workman Arts Theatre, Youth Tobacco Coalition, Bank of Nova Scotia, and CAMH, among others.

After residing in Toronto for over fifty years, ‘the Toms’ moved to Kingston in December to be close to family. Unfortunately this move was short circuited by visits to Kingston General Hospital and then ultimately to Providence in mid January - a beautiful facility and a ‘room with a view’ over Lake Ontario. There could not have been a more caring, welcoming place to be during these difficult times, with its amazing staff of doctors, nurses and support staff, and a COVID policy that allowed visitors 24/7.  We thank the many friends who visited, the multiple floral tributes, gifts of favourite foods, and messages of support and hope over these past weeks.

Due to COVID, celebrations of TR’s life will be held at future dates in Kingston, Toronto, Saint Andrews, NB and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
