1954-2020

George passed away on his own terms surrounded by his family. He will be missed by his wife Cindy (Rainey) of 37 years, daughters Rhonda (Matt) Storms and Colleen, grandchildren Peyton and Erik as well as his sisters Jennifer Molleson, Christine LeClair, Robbie Chapman and their families. George is predeceased by his parents Robert (Bob) and Marion Gorrie.

There will be a Funeral Service held in the James Reid Funeral Home on Saturday February 22, 2020 at 1pm.

Born 9 June 1954 in Kingston Ontario, George was the firstborn and only son of Bob and Marion (Martin) Gorrie.  Over the next 7 years, the family grew to include 3 sisters. With many extended-family gatherings, there was lots of opportunities for George to play with his many Canadian cousins.  In January 1962, his parents moved the family to Scotland where George met a whole new group of cousins, Uncles, Aunties and grandparents.  Three and a half years later, the family boarded the Empress of Canada, made the trans-Atlantic voyage and returned to Canada.

During his school years, George made friendships that lasted for over 50 years.  In high school he played soccer, but his love of football stayed with him until the day he died.  In his early 20’s he bought himself a 1959 Corvette.  How he loved that car!  He eventually sold the Vette to pay for school.  In 1978, he attended Queen’s University where he played fullback on the football team.  That year the Queen’s Golden Gaels won the Vanier Cup —(championship of Canadian university football).

In 1982, he married Cindy Rainey (and daughter Rhonda) and 10 years later, they completed the family with the birth of daughter Colleen.  

George and Cindy loved to travel!  Their adventures started on their honeymoon to Bermuda and grew from there.  They loved cruising and Disney and did both often.  They enjoyed traveling with other families which only managed to increase the fun for everyone.

George served the citizens of Kingston as a Fire Fighter for 27 years and was a building inspector in several local counties for 14+ years.  He built a house for his parents and eventually raised his family in that very house.  He was an avid reader of newspapers and history and had tons of trivial bits of knowledge stored away in his brain ready come out and the most opportune times.

Family and friends were very important to George and he was fortunate enough to gather with his extended family every Saturday morning for breakfast.  Saturday afternoon was dedicated to a pub visit with his long time friends.  It was his favourite day of the week.

During his final years, he had many physical and medical set backs.  He lived and died on his own terms and he will be greatly missed by us all.
