Roland Jackson
Roland Jackson, 90 of Treasure Island, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 at Kingston General Hospital. He was a man of integrity, wit, curiosity and a strong love of nature, deeply connected to the island and the St. Lawrence River.
Roland, a handsome man in his prime, would go into Kingston to socialize with friends but lived most of his life on Treasure Island, well loved by neighbours, family and friends. He appreciated and was profoundly connected to the island’s history, its natural setting and the wildlife that lived there in all seasons.
Roland’s father Gordon T. Jackson bought the island in 1940 and renamed it “Treasure Island”. After building a home for the family and a causeway to the mainland, the island was developed into a recreation destination, open to families and groups during the summer months. Visitors enjoyed the scenic beachfront and grounds, cottages and canteen. Roland maintained the property during this period and continued to live on the island as it was divided into building lots for other homeowners.
Roland was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Kingston. He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon T. Jackson and Olive Evelyn Selby Jackson, step-mother Laurel Jackson, brother, Gerald Jackson of Kingston, and step-brother William Gowan of Syracuse, NY. Survivors include his nephews Bill Gowan (Marnie) and Ron Gowan (Patti), sister-in-law, Sandra Jackson, nieces, Malina Trott (Kevin) and Janina Bracciodieta (Enzo), their children and other relatives in the Kingston area. James Reid Funeral Home, Kingston, is assisting with arrangements.
A celebration of Roland Jackson’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 7th, 12noon – 2 p.m. in the Great Hall at Fort Henry, Kingston, including a time of remembrance starting at 12 noon followed by a reception.
