Obituary of Hope Turner
After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Hope passed away at home early in the morning on October 07, 2019 at the age of 86. She was the loving wife to the late Brigadier-General W.W. (Bill) Turner for 65 years and is survived by their three children: William (Nadine), Hope (Serge), and John; and by six grandchildren: Colin (Jill), Amanda (Lee), Scott, Ant (Marce), Britt (Adrian), and Hayley (Cal). She was also the loving Great Grandmother to Logan, Dawson, Hudson, Emily and Ethan.
Hope was predeceased by her parents Flight Lieutenant Gerald Russell and Catherine Mary Richardson, and her brothers Brigadier David Russell and Hugh Richardson. She is survived by her sisters Paddy Thomas and Faith Williams and many nephews and nieces in England, Canada and the USA.
Hope was born in Knebworth, England on December 22, 1932. She experienced the highs and lows of WWII in England as a child and lived through rationing after the War as a teenager. She was engaged to an English Army Officer at the age of 18 but met Bill at a dinner party in Salisbury and married him six weeks later. Hope was then the consummate Army wife for 45 years, always providing loving and welcoming homes to her family during postings to England, the Middle East, Germany and several cities across Canada.
After Bill's retirement from the Army, Hope and Bill settled in Kingston in a beautiful home on Highway 15. There, they created many wonderful and lasting memories for their children and grandchildren both during the summer around the pool and over many Christmas' around the tree and fireplace. In 2001, Hope and Bill 'downsized' to an apartment overlooking RMC and Lake Ontario and spent many days and evenings enjoying their stunning views with family and friends. Hope will be dearly missed but always remembered for her love and devotion to her family, her great sense of humour, and her strong opinions on most matters - which she occasionally shared.
Hope will be cremated in the care of James Reid Funeral Home. A graveside service and a Celebration of her Life will be held later in the Fall. The family wishes to thank Rose, Chris and Ann-Marie, Dr 'Andy' Ross and the many other physicians, nurses and carers who looked after Hope with much care and love over the last years of her life. William and John would also like to recognize their sister Hopey for being the best daughter and friend a mother could have.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Hope may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
