It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Gordon Salt, of Kingston, Ontario on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the age of 80.
Born July 3, 1938, to the late Henry Stuart and Madeline Maude (Lilly) Salt, in Toronto, Jim was destined to work on the water and, following in his father’s footsteps, became the next in a long line of certified First Class Marine Engineers.
Jim lived a life full of love, family and travel. He began his working life on dry land employed by John Birch & Co. Ltd. in Bahrain, but the call of the sea was too great, and in 1963 he began working as a Jr. Engineer on various seagoing vessels, including tankers, passenger ferries and Canadian Coast Guard Ships. In 1971 Jim found a more stable job suitable for his now growing family as an inspector with the Ship Safety branch of the Canadian Coast Guard. He served in Sydney, NS, Ottawa, Clarenville, Nfld, Sarnia and Toronto, and finished his career with now Transport Canada in Kingston, Ontario, in 2000. He continued to work at his leisure as a consultant and lecturer, travelling several times to Italy and Taiwan, until fully retiring in 2007.
Jim was always active in whatever community he found himself. He became an integral member of the Navy League of Canada while living in Sarnia, Ont., and was heavily involved in the Sea Cadet movement there. His impact on the cadets was such that many considered him a second father. To them he was a mentor and someone they could always count on.
To his former colleagues, Jim will be remembered as a man of principles, dedicated to doing the job to the best of his abilities and expecting no less from those who worked for him. To the owners and operators in the commercial shipping industry, he was known as a no nonsense man, who never cut corners and followed the rules to the letter, always thinking of the safety of the public no matter the consequences. To his friends, he was always ready to help, was known to have an interesting sense of humour and always had a drink waiting for visitors. To his family, he was quiet and loving, a perfectionist, and so proud of every accomplishment his children achieved, and who adored his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Denise (Winstall), children Megan (Glenn MacKay-deceased), James (Angela Wylie), Mark (Betty Rebelo), and Christine (Darin Viens), brother Robert Stuart (Edna Mary), beloved grandchildren Jordan, Josh, Jordyn, Chantal, Ethan, Ella, and Sophia, and more nieces, nephews and cousins to count.
Visitation will be Saturday, 22 June, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial celebration under the direction of James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jim’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
