Obituary of Hugh A. BROWN

BROWN, Dr. Hugh Alexander, MD CM '59, died Friday, June 10, 2016, in Kingston, Ontario. To cherish Hugh's memory are his loving wife of 44 years, Ann (nee Brothers), devoted and beloved daughters, Jennifer (Ian) and Angela, and precious grandchildren, Catherine, Alexander, William and Kyle. Hugh was born in Vancouver in 1933. He completed his undergraduate degree in science at the University of British Columbia and graduated in medicine from McGill University in 1959. After an internship in Vancouver, Hugh was Assistant Resident Medicine, Montreal General Hospital (1960-61); Resident in Anesthesia, McGill Diploma Program, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal (1961-63); Fellow in Anesthesia, Hopital Foch, Paris (1963-1964); Clinical Fellow in Anesthesia, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal (1964-65); Clinical Fellow in Anesthesia, St. Mary's Hospital, Montreal. Hugh was mentored by Dr. Phillip Bromage in epidural anesthesia, which remained a major clinical interest. In 1965, Hugh joined the Attending staff in Anesthesia at St. Mary's Hospital, Montreal, and served as lecturer in Anesthesia at McGill University. In January, 1973, Hugh was appointed as Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Queen's University Faculty of Medicine, and to the Attending Staff at Kingston General and Hotel Dieu Hospitals. From 1974-1993, he served as Resident Program Director in Anesthesiology. He earned a Master's Degree in Education (Queen's) in 1996. He pursued his clinical interest in pain management and regional anesthesia, receiving his American Board Certification in 1994. As Associate Professor, Hugh retired in 2006. Hugh was a man of principle and integrity. He was dedicated to his profession and devoted to his family, which included the Great Danes. One of his endearing characteristics was a very dry sense of humour. He was passionate about sailing and was an excellent swimmer. His other interests included reading, listening to classical music, and a fascination with history. Hugh also enjoyed photography, cross country skiing, hiking and walking. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Hugh (1973) and Diana (nee Porteous) Brown (2014). In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his sister, Stephanie Stratton (Larry), nieces and nephews, and very dear friends in Kingston, the Thousand Islands, Montreal and British Columbia. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Fairmount Home. Visitation will take place on Saturday, June 18th from 3 - 5 pm and on Monday, June 20th from 11 am - 1 pm at the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, 1900 John Counter Boulevard, Kingston. The family will be having a private funeral service later in the afternoon on Monday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made payable to: Queen's University (with Memo portion of cheque stating "Department of Anesthesiology in memory of Dr. Hugh Brown")to support medical research, would be appreciated by the family.
