Obituary of John Robert MacKay

It is with heavy hearts that the MacKay family announces the peaceful passing at home of John Robert MacKay on November 3, 2020, at the age of 72. John, an only child, was predeceased by his parents David and Phyllis MacKay of Kingston. The most important thing in John’s life was his family and he will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 42 years, Shirley, and his children Geoff, Steph (Kyle), and Andrew, of whom who he was immensely proud. He was the adoring “Grumps” to his grandchildren Linden, Rowan and Juniper and his granddogs Sitka, Canoe and Charlie. He was also remarkably close to his cousin Steve Knox who was like a brother to him.

John grew up in Kingston, Ontario. His childhood was filled with sports, friends and wonderful memories. While he loved Ottawa, he always considered himself a K-Town boy at heart. He graduated from Queen’s University with a B.Com (Hons.) 1970  and was a CPA, CMA.

John had a cherished circle of friends from his school days in Kingston, his classmates and buddies from Queen’s and close working colleagues in Ottawa. Most of his professional life was spent in the Federal Government, as a senior program officer and policy analyst in CBSA’s Anti-Dumping unit, investigating unfair trade practices by foreign exporters to Canada. He held various other positions in the Federal Public Service including senior auditor, research analyst, and senior case assessment officer.

John was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer at age 65, and with treatment, spent the next seven years enjoying life. His family would like to thank Drs. Ong, Warren, Dyason , Eapen, Whitehead, Dinning, and McKinnon, the nurses and other medical staff at the Cancer Centres in the major Ottawa hospitals and the nurses and PSWs who visited him at home for the excellent care he received. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Due to the current public health situation, and evolving covid restrictions, a private graveside service  has been held at Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston, Ontario.  Online condolences and donations may be made at jamesreidfuneralhome.com.
