Obituary of Sylvia Grace Hearn

Sylvia Grace Hearn nee Packer, aged 87, passed away peacefully October 9th in Kingston, Ontario with her family by her side. She is survived by her son’s Al and Ian, Al’s partner Lory and Ian’s wife Anne-Kristine, her four grandchildren Bryan, Joanna, Alexander and Eric, her sister Connie and nephews Shane and Randy. She will also be remembered fondly by her brother and sister-in-law Jim and Edith Hearn, nephew Bob Jewel his wife Darlene, niece Angela and their families as well as many great friends. Sylvia’s husband of over 60 years passed away in December 2017.

Sylvia graduated from Guelph University with a degree in textiles and worked in textile research. After starting a family, she returned to work as a high school home economics teacher and enjoyed a long career, even creating her own innovations such as a bachelor living class for boys.

With somewhat of a restless spirit, Sylvia was driven to create, including the building of a log cottage on Bridgen’s Island, Eagle lake and taking over a 100-acre farm with an 1867 limestone farmhouse that required a lot of renovation. She especially enjoyed landscaping and creating beautiful gardens. Her sons Al and Ian enjoyed a unique childhood growing up on the farm with horses and many other animals and spending summers at the cottage.

Sylvia loved her cats, traveling, dancing and spending time with friends, often playing cards. Ed and Sylvia saw much of the world from cruise ships from which they created many happy memories. They belonged to the Canuck Club for dancing, Amazing Years club for bridge and other card games and Edith Rankin United Church. They had many great friends through these organizations

For the last  year Sylvia lived at the Royale Retirement Residence in Kingston where she was as active as ever with all they had to offer including: making new friends like her great friend Jack, playing cards, doing art and craft projects, going to the in house movies, enjoying outings, games, fun special events and celebrations.

Sylvia’s life included a lot to be thankful for. There will be a visitation on Saturday October 17th from 1-3 at James Reid Funeral Home. Call to book a time slot since only small groups will be allowed at a time, to ensure a safe visit. The family is also planning a graveside ceremony and a celebration of life in the Spring. We hope you will join us to fondly remember this lovely and elegant lady.
