Dear Hearn family, We were saddened to hear of Sylvia's passing. We always looked forward to spending time with her at the cottage. There are many fond memories. From her witty dry sense of humour. Her infamous and much fought over - butter tarts. To coming to our aid with a lot of island transportation, when our boat was stolen one summer. I was deeply saddened to learn of Sylvia’s passing. Sylvia and I worked together at Frontenac Secondary School for many years ... Sylvia taught Family Studies and I taught English. I was very impressed by Sylvia’s dedication to her students and to the school. She taught her students valuable life skills and worked tirelessly to provide delicious treats for students, families and staff on special occasions such as commencement. She was always willing to go the extra mile for everyone.
In her free time, Sylvia loved to go on cruises. As well as enjoying seeing far away places, she enjoyed ballroom dancing aboard. I understand that she was very good at it and spent many hours dancing on each ship she was on ... and there were many!
It was delightful to have her sons, Al and Ian at F.S.S. She was a devoted mother and was so very proud of them. I always enjoyed hearing her tell me about their accomplishments, even after they graduated from the school.
What a delightful, gracious lady she was! I hope that, in time, the pain of losing her will subside and wonderful memories of her will remain. My thoughts are with you all.

To Al and Ian I wanted to pass on my condolences from the Skepple family.
Mrs. Hearn was a beloved teacher at Frontenac Secondary who had a keen interest in her students and music at Frontenac. Mrs. Hearn was the epitome of kindness, grace, and elegance. I remember many things about her especially that young boys were welcomed in her Home Economics classes (which was novel in the 1970's) and that she never failed to encourage me to stay at my music. As Al and I played in the band she was always at concerts and also accompanied the band on trips. When I returned to FSS to coach years later she was still there still encouraging and nurturing. Just an amazing teacher and person. My fondest memory of Mrs. Hearn was a Vimy Band concert at Frontenac when she started dancing with one of the band members during a song. She was always so proud of me for achieving my goal of playing in the Vimy Band.
My Mom died shortly after Mrs. Hearn and I can't help but think of the great loss of these two teachers of impact. Teachers that had an impact on the lives of their students. Sylvia Hearn was a teacher of impact, a leader, and someone who left the world a better place than she found it.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sylvia's family during this difficult time of loss.
I got to know Sylvia through our UCW unit at Edith Rankin United Church. Over the last twenty years, Sylvia helped our unit with amazing food and organized wonderful fund raising events which were really creative and fun to create and attend.

I remember the first time I met Sylvia, she had her son, Ian by her side. Little did we know that he would some day become a loved son-in-law of mine.
Sylvia knew hard work. As a child, when her father was hospitalized during war years, her Mother bravely took on providing room and board to workers, raised on farms, who were then working in factories for the war effort. As the daughter of a doctor, it took guts to do this. Sylvia, as the oldest child, pitched in to help, including baking. That's when she learned to make the best butter tarts.
In building her lovely log cabin, at the top of a rise of land, Sylvia, with Ian and Al's help, stripped the bark from the tall trees felled on her property. When some had to overwinter before being treated, she scrubbed them to remove blemishes. Little wonder that in later years, Sylvia so enjoyed the pampering of cruises and loved to dance. She had earned it. When her cottage was completed, she finished the interior with style. May she be dancing on clouds.
