Mary Ball

Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Ball

Passed away unexpectedly on January 24th, 2022, in her 83rd year. Wife to husband Hubert (deceased), sister to Doris Waddell and Adrienne Esford (deceased), loving mother by her children David (Vicki) and Susan (Craig), cherished Nana to Eli, and favourite aunt Betty to many nieces and nephews.

Betty is a woman hard to sum up. She had a lifelong passion for learning, and for teaching others. Her 40-year vocation as an elementary school teacher combined with her two master’s degrees – one in education and the other theology – was a foundation of her commitment to both her family and the Kingston community.

She was a poet, creative writer, and political activist with a warrior spirit who sought to make the world better. Whether advocating to improve the health care and education systems, founding the local chapter of the Colorectal Cancer Support Group and coaching many cancer survivors and their families, or working with the Kingston & the Islands Liberal Women’s Association, Betty was never afraid to speak up for those in need.

Betty was active all of her life, enjoying long walks and swimming at Lakeshore pool. Age may have slowed her, but it didn’t stop her from living a rich, independent life. Even the cancer that took her from us was met with fiery resistance. Her positive spirit always shone through.

Betty had a great life, loved her family and friends and she was dearly loved in return. She was at peace when she left us. We could do with more Betty Ball’s in the world right now. We will miss her and keep her in our hearts.

With pandemic restrictions in place, a graveside service and celebration of life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations to UHKF Providence Care Transition Unit, where she received great care, or the UHKF Kingston Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated.
