Betty certainly was a woman who is hard to sum up. She was always present when a cause demanded it, or help was needed. Being a teacher, Betty knew how to get things done and organize - a blessing on any campaign - political or otherwise! The Kingston community has lost a great committed community champion. We could indeed "do with more Betty Ball’s in the world right now." Sending my heartfelt condolences to David and Susan and your families. Rest in Peace dear Betty, you will be missed and thought of frequently.

The Lucey family, Toronto, wishes to extend deepest sympathies to David and Susan and young Eli and indeed to the entire extended Ball and Melrose family members (and to all the friends who luckily got to know Betty and truly loved her) on the passing of a very special and energetic lady and a dear kind mother and grandmother. Our prayers are with you all at this very sad time.
"Go mbeidh na h-Aingeail sna Flaithís ag fanacht léi” is an old Irish Blessing which translates to say “May the angels in heaven be waiting for dear Betty and may she now sit at God’s right hand.”
May Betty's kind and loving soul now rest in peace and may the sympathy and caring of friends and her everlasting and fond memory be a blessing for us all.
Jim and Margaret Lucey and family, Toronto

We were so saddened to hear of Betty's passing. She was a wonderfully creative teacher and much admired by her students and fellow staff members. It was an unexpected shock to hear about the loss of your beloved mother, Betty. Jerome and I are thinking of you during this time of sadness.
My friendship with Betty goes back to R.G. Sinclair days where, as a young teacher she became a mentor, a great listener, a wonderful source of endless ideas, an inspiration, and a dear friend. In retirement we were able to keep in touch through lunches with other colleagues and I will cherish the memories of laughter, joy, and always love. Your mother was a wonderful soul, and she will always be in our hearts. Our sincere condolences to David, Susan, and families.

Betty was a highly respected teacher at Henderson school when I had the privilege of being her substitute teacher during her absences when she experienced difficult times in her family. Her standards were very high and attempting to fill her shoes was no easy task. Betty was always so appreciative of my efforts & I cherish gifts that she gave me in recognition of my endeavours. She was so proud of David & Susan and never failed to share their many accomplishments. To them I want to convey my deepest sympathy as they grieve the loss of their mother.

I believe that Betty's first full time job was teaching grade 5(?)at Portsmouth Public School, now Kingston's Seniors' Centre. It was about 1959 and she was about nineteen, fresh out of teacher's college. I was a ten year old boy. She was petit and blonde and wonderful.....
Portsmouth was something of a rough school then and the kids in our class were no exception. I have a recollection that one tough older boy was so exasperating and disrespectful to her that she teared up in class. Sitting by, helpless, I hated him for it!
Don't know if I was a teacher's pet, but I sure tried!
I did not meet "Miss Melrose" in later years but my wife, a retired life-long teacher, respected her greatly. The appreciation Betty instilled in me for the written word has served me well over my seventy-three years.
Thanks, Miss Melrose. You are fondly remembered. R.I.P.

On behalf of the Colorectal Cancer Resource & Action Network (CCRAN), please accept our sincere and profound condolences on the loss of a remarkable and loving woman who championed the wellbeing of others afflicted with a cowardly pathology. Betty was a warrior who knew no boundaries when it came to advocating for others whose voice had been silenced by pain, disease or fear. The world was a better place because Betty was in it! She will be sincerely missed but never forgotten because she has had such a positive impact on so many peoples' lives.
Warmly,
Filomena
