Obituary of Malcolm Scott McPhee
On Friday, November 5th, 2021, Dr. Malcolm Scott McPhee passed away peacefully at the age of 81 in Ottawa, Ontario. Predeceased by his wife Barbara McPhee (née Hogg) in 1995, Malcolm is survived by his three children, Tracey O’Sullivan (Sean Bouschel), Joanne Mosquera (Gus Mosquera), and Christopher McPhee (Erin McPhee), his eight grandchildren (Meghan and Jack; Connor, Brenn, and Isabelle; Fionn, Cormac, and Orla), his sister Victoria Usiskin (Sid Usiskin), his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill Hogg (Nancy Savage), Elizabeth Munroe (Philip Hawkins), Bill Gunter (husband of the late Catherine Gunter), and Malcolm’s wife Beverley Green.
Born in 1940 in Toronto, Ontario, to Garnet Ray McPhee and Jean Rebecca McPhee (née Scott), Malcolm spent his early years in Napanee before moving as a teenager to Kingston, where he met his future wife Barbara and completed his medical degree at Queen’s University in 1965. He then moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he trained as a urologist and started his surgical practice at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. In Edmonton, both his family and his career flourished. He ultimately became Director of the Division of Urology at the University of Alberta and Director of Surgery at the Cross Cancer Institute (where he developed a collaborative multidisciplinary research program alongside his medical practice, which included pioneering work in radiobiology, hospice care, and the use of lasers in surgery). Malcolm also had significant leadership roles with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Urological Association. These were but a few highlights among his many other accomplishments in the medical profession, where his skills as a researcher, teacher, surgeon were valued by his colleagues, his students, and above all, his patients. He retired in 1995, after which he focused primarily on his artistic endeavours. As a talented surgeon, painter, pianist, and pilot, Malcolm was a modern “renaissance man”, excelling in every field he put his mind to. Tragically, vascular dementia gradually eroded his abilities, but it did not diminish his kind spirit and sense of humour. In 2017, Malcolm moved to Ottawa to be closer to his three children. He was surrounded by his much-loved family during his final days.
