Malcolm made an impression with his artistic talents - He could sit at the piano and play beautifully from memory and created many beautiful paintings. We are honored to have some of these displayed in our homes. While going through old photos we pulled out Malcolm's 1999 memoir “Reflections of Edmonton Urology Through a Personal Retrospectoscope” which includes lovely photos of his family and his paintings.
After moving to Edmonton in 1981, Bill fondly remembers sitting with Malcolm in his back yard overlooking his pond, drinking scotch, smoking a cigar and taking about their families. This past summer (40 years later) Bill visited Malcolm in Ottawa and took him on a walk in his wheelchair. Though there were neither cigars nor scotch, there was a pleasant time between the brothers in law. We continue to treasure our family bonds and memories.

My sincere condolences to the McPhee family. I met the 'renaissance man' after he retired and donated his baby grand piano to the Cross Cancer Institute with the goal it would be placed in a public place for all to enjoy playing or listening to someone play it. From there a weekly lunch hour music program began, with Malcolm often being the guest artist making beautiful music resinate in the Atrium. I quickly learned he was a very gifted generous man. His donation brought pleasure too many many people who entered the Cross. To this day the piano still resides in the east Atrium of the Institute. Thank you Malcolm for sharing you precious gift with all who enter the Cross.

I have many memories of adventures with Malc. beginning in Kingston, sailing, flying, singing around the piano at class parties. Yes, he was a 'renaissance man'---so many talents--kind, gentle, wry sense of humour, and a true friend. He loved sailing and we shared several west coast adventures. The attached painting of Talisman in an isolated inlet north of Prince Rupert hangs in my den and reminds me daily of the rich friendship we shared.

We are so sorry to hear of Malcolm’s passing. He was a wonderful friend and neighbour for many years, and we enjoyed some good chats on the back driveway. He was always ready to lend a hand, racing over with his medical bag (baby Jared had stuck something up his nose) or spotting an intruder trying to get through an upstairs window (Karen had locked herself out). We have missed hearing gorgeous piano music as we walk the dogs past the house, or being invited in to see the most recently finished painting. Our sincere condolences for your loss.

I had the great pleasure, privilege and fun of working with Malcolm as a nurse at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He was very popular and when Malcolm's name was on the slate everyone knew it would be a good day. He led a full and happy life with loss but was able to contribute and lead a good life. He made the world a better place. Marjorie Phillips.

I was a medical school classmate of Malcolm and thus, knew him in his student years when our lives were yet to unfold. Malcolm was a handsome, popular fellow, rather on the quiet, modest side.
I saw him last in August, 2000 when we attended our 35th medical class reunion at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England. I subsequently learned of his considerable accomplishments as a landscape painter. The one painting I saw was highly accomplished with sophisticated technique and beautiful nuances in brushwork that would easily have made him a successful artist had he chosen this professional pursuit. Moreover, he was an adventurous pilot, a dimension his quiet manner never revealed to me in our student days. I have every reason to believe he was a competent, respected urologist and loved by his associates and patients.
I mourn his loss but celebrate his numerous and significant accomplishments. He was a splendid human being.
I send my condolences to his entire family.
