You will remain in my brain,
Phantom-like and formless,
Trapped inside—
To stand guard, steadfast
And resolute.
For you will not go quietly,
Even though the night is long,
And cankerous.
You are not beholden to it.
And you will overcome,
It already happened, you see
“It’ll be over soon.”
They said.
“The body can only take so much.”
They said.
And you proved them wrong.
So you will stay with us,
With a stoic smile,
Standing tall,
with arms outstretched and that fabulous hair,
You will remain with us,
For all time.
-James

Milt was my high school sweetheart and the father of two of my precious children. He was such a lot of fun to be with when we were teenagers; a great dancer and mimic; the centre of attention with his crazy sense of humour. But he had a deeper, more spiritual side. Even as a young man, people were naturally drawn to him. He had a gift of being able to connect with everyone and a rare ability to listen.
It is a testament to his selfless caring nature that, even when our lives drifted apart, he remained a good friend and he and Donna cherished members of our family. Milt was a good man in every sense of the word, as well as a loving father. I will miss him. The memory of his gentle wisdom and strength of spirit will be with me always.
Love

Words can't begin to express my deep and heartfelt sympathy to you Donna, Scott and Lol. I have loved Milton since I was about 12 years old and have always been grateful for his presence in my life. He endured so much, but told me on many occasions when I'd press him to tell me why he soldiered on, that it was because...."I want to be here" and because he loved you Donna, Scott and Lol, so very much. A lesser human would have chosen to leave this earth years ago, but he loved you all and loved life to the absolute fullest. He was a wonderfully funny, good, kind and loving man.
One of my fondest memories of him was during our years at Nepean High School when he, Perry and Winston shuffled onto the stage, singing and carrying a long white piece of material, appearing to be naked behind that material. I can't remember the song they sang because I was laughing so much! I will always cherish the day I spent with him in October of 2017 when he drove me all over Ottawa and we visited our childhood homes, our schools, places we went to as teenagers and the Byward Market. Thank you Donna for letting me take him away that day!! I will never forget it!!
With love from the depths of my soul,
Les

Your Dad was an incredible survivor to do as well as he did to keep going for as long as he did. It really tells you how much he treasured living! We can all learn a thing or two from that and treasure each precious moment on earth ourselves.
Uncle Mo was a great man and you should be proud to have had such an awesome Dad!!! I really thought he was my uncle for the longest time when I was a kid. That’s how I’ll remember him too...and how he first introduced me to Tom Waits on that drive up to Shuswap that summer. I would have loved the chance to play a Tom Waits song for him in person. I’ll play one as a tribute to him soon though to be sure! I love you so much

I remember Poppa's laugh, bright smile, and the way he would joke with me. He was kind, caring, and funny. I am grateful to be part of his family and will carry his memory with me through my life.

When Death Comes
By Mary Oliver
When death comes
like the hungry bear in autumn;
when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse
to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
when death comes
like the measle-pox
when death comes
like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,
I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering:
what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?
And therefore I look upon everything
as a brotherhood and a sisterhood,
and I look upon time as no more than an idea,
and I consider eternity as another possibility,
and I think of each life as a flower, as common
as a field daisy, and as singular,
and each name a comfortable music in the mouth,
tending, as all music does, toward silence,
and each body a lion of courage, and something
precious to the earth.
When it's over, I want to say all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.
When it's over, I don't want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.
I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.
I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

Face Sonnet - by Scott McBride March 31/2019
The character of a man lies in his face
The crinkly lines etched about his eyes
Become deeper still when smiles arise
And fills the room with warmth and grace
The noble nose has a dignified place
Confirming the visage both humble and wise
A wicked grin beckons mischievous ties
And echoes of laughter resound in the space
This wrinkled face remains so aware
Attuned to the whispers of sad souls
Needing that melting embrace to ease woes
A thoughtful patience listens with care
Then my Dad’s soothing voice fills the air
With all the love he can bestow
Love you always, Dad!
Scott

WORN OUT WARRIOR - by Milt McBride
Like old warring nations
Struggling in despair
Many body complications
Pulling out my hair
Denying any easy solutions
Few remedies are there.
Don't need absolutions
Don't need a scare
Just my brain's assertions
That really I do care
Despite life's cautions
Crowing beware,beware
I have loves' many emotions
To win is only fair.
Thanks for the devotion
And let's not dare
Play with the fear
Of the great Anywhere
Enjoy just being here
With love the soothing lotion.

Some people who are regarded as 'Great', have accomplished things that have been viewed by the whole world as great. Some of that greatness is because of their popularity, in itself. Being known for a single, definitive action is, sometimes, all it takes: a mountain climbed, ..a discovery, an invention, or even a hit song. Their skill or talent is enhanced by the number of their fans.
But there are others of Greatness, who go quietly along the path of their lives, dropping petals of kindness, understanding, compassion, ...nuggets of intelligence, ..and even humour. They don't broadcast their commitment to decency, their code of fairness or their belief in being positive. They don't have millions of fans and their names are not known worldwide, ....but the indelible impression left on those who have received their smile, or felt the warmth of their attentive gentleness, is indelible. Greatness, achieved slowly, through constant values and persistent self-control, resulting in a Life well-lived, and host of friends, family and acquaintances who all have felt the Greatness...of a solidly GOOD man. For me, Milton McBride achieved Greatness in a quiet, unassuming way ....and I'll remember him, each time , ...I try to make myself better.
