Obituary of Maurice W.J. SMITH

Dr. Maurice W. J. Smith June 2, 1929 - January 28, 2016 It is with sadness that we announce the passing, peacefully at home, of Dr. Maurice Smith. Loving and beloved husband of Margaret, soul mates for 64 years. Proud and devoted father of Alasdair (Elaine), Graeme (Sue) and Rod (Sandra). Doting Grandpa of Shannon, our late Cameron, Gaelen, Ainsley, William and Moira. A medical graduate in 1957 from Glasgow University, Maurice was a family doctor in East York, Toronto for over 30 years. Revered by so many in his practice, his dedication to his patients was honoured in 1997 with the Ontario Medical Association's "Glenn Sawyer" award for "service to the profession and to the community". He was also actively involved at the Toronto East General Hospital and the then Riverdale Hospital where long term care and orthopaedic rehabilitation units were under his care. He died as he lived; uncomplaining, and with the same courage and determination that he showed when, in 1963, he brought his young family from his native Scotland to begin a rewarding new life in Canada. A memorial service will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, on Saturday, February 6 at 2:30 PM with a reception to follow.
