To Carolyn, Sandra, Patrick, Family Members & Friends,
Members of the Supplementary Radio (SUPRAD) System Oldtimer's Association, (a group of retired Communicator Research personnel and CELE officers), met at CFS Leitrim, 8 December. A lot of the day's discussions were centered around the passing of a friend, General 'Donny' Banks. Everyone who admired and respected him had a story they wanted to share. Mostly, their stories were about the General's down to earth, one of the guys, personality. Their stories painted a picture of, regardless of the situation, he always put the welfare and well-being of his personnel first. As members of your extended military family, please know that we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. RIP General.

Carol, we are so sad. Don was a friend, leader, colleague, professor and above all a character. The world needs characters and he played his role well. My Carol and I remember one of the first stories he told us was of when you were first married and he got an automatic TV. Your bedroom was so small that he could lay on the bed and poke the TV with a stick to change channels. A true character. We also remember several catfish parties at the Spencers and other great events. The world is a little more grey today without Don.

It is inevitable that the people we know and love will pass from our lives. While our departed friends and loved ones are sorely missed and all leave holes in our hearts , some leave having made an incalculable positive effect on all those who had the great fortune to get to know them - General Don Banks was one of those rare few such individuals.
We were all blessed to have had General Banks and Carol in our military lives . It is a sad day and a tremendous loss for our C&E Branch Family, but also a time to be rightfully proud of a giant of a man in our times - it is indeed true that great things come in 'small packages'.
May he rest in peace, and to Carol , Sandra and Patrick and the entire Banks family - thank you for having shared your Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother with us, and may you find some measure of comfort and peace in this sad time from the support and love from your friends and family and the knowledge that Don was so admired, respected and loved by his military family.

Don was already a C&E legend when I joined in 1976. The real effect Don had on those around him came home when my daughter worked at the C&E Museum about 36 years later. She came home to tell me about this wonderful man, a retired General, who made everyone working at the Museum happier while he was there. I told her that was General Banks and that he indeed had great character. She said "He just said his name was Don". That was General Don Banks at his best. VVV Chris Hall, CPO2 (Retd)

I have lost one of the family,Don and I have known each other for 58 years, both starting as RC Sigs Soldier Apprentices. He was the ultimate Officer and gentleman and at times could be a real shit disturber. We have been on major parades together, crawled around "knee-walking" drunk in the sands of Egypt, and we proudly stood in front of Royality. We were both very fortunate in meeting and marrying the loves of our life 53 years ago. They have both been the steadying hand for us during all those years. My condolences got out to Carol,Patrick,Sandra, grand-kids, and all family members. RIP-SOLDIER

As a soldier, paratrooper, signaler and leader, Don made his mark on the RCCS, the C&E Branch and the Canadian Forces with the successes that he had leading and commanding at every rank and in many different facets of our military family. After retirement, he continued to lead and contribute in many important ways, setting a fine example.
