Obituary of Marshall Hedley WARDER
Marshall Hedley Warder
June 3, 1930 - Jan 9, 2016
Marshall passed away at Fairmount Home for the Aged on January 9, 2016. He was born on June 3, 1930, in Harpenden, England but soon after moved to the Isle of Wight which was the beginning of his love for the sea and sailing. Marshall was the much loved son of the late Hedley and Daisy Warder, dear brother of Kathleen (Gordon Wheeler) and June (the late Roy Hooper), beloved husband of 60 years of Elizabeth (Betty) Chesters and dear father of Melanie (Tim Farr), Alison (Bertrand Millot) and Hilary (Walter Abicht). He received a British Empire Scholarship to study chemical engineering at Loughborough College and it was there that he met Betty at a school dance. After a two year stint in the British Navy, he and Betty married and together made the decision to leave home and family and emigrate to Canada. In November of 1956, they boarded the SS Ryndam with Melanie to make a memorable four day trip across the North Atlantic. Soon after arriving in Canada they were joined by his in-laws (the late Lewis and Emma Chesters) and within a few years, daughters Alison and Hilary were born. Marshall's passion for sailing included many years of membership at the Kingston Yacht Club, volunteering annually for C.O.R.K., and acting as the Liaison Officer for the 1976 British Olympic Sailing team. After a 34 year career with Dupont of Canada first in engineering and later in sales and marketing, Marshall retired in Kingston and settled down to enjoy golf, gardening and grandchildren - Marshall (Martine) and Shannon Farr (Matt Hollinger), Nicholas and Matthew Millot, Alex and Emma Abicht. Sadly, dementia prevented him from knowing great-grandchildren, Tristan and Nadine Farr and Fiona Hollinger. Marshall leaves many dear relatives in Canada and England. We wish to express our deepest thanks to the staff at Fairmount Home for their compassionate care during the last three years and to Marshall's caregiver, Barbara Orme, for her wonderful care of Dad while he was at Fairmount. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016, also at James Reid Funeral Home with a reception to follow in their reception centre. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fairmount Home for the Aged, the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
