Obituary of Mary CAMPBELL
Campbell, Mary Somerville on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the Kingston General Hospital, in her ninety-seventh year. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 71 years, Donald Norval Campbell. Missed by her only daughter, Donna and her husband Robert Johnston, her grandsons Robert Johnston and his wife Effie, and Campbell Johnston and his wife Jill. Cherished great-nana to her great-grandsons Dylan and Bobby and great-granddaughter Jennifer. Predeceased by her parents Mary and Joseph Craig, and by her brothers John and Joe Craig. Fondly remembered by her sister Janet Henry and by her many nieces and nephews. Mary Somerville Craig was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 22nd of February, 1920. The next year her parents set out for Canada, arriving in Halifax in April, 1921. They lived in Halifax for several years, before moving to Chippawa, Ontario. By 1926, the family had grown to include two boys, Joe and John, and sister Janet. After her father s death in 1930, she helped her mother with the younger children, as they struggled to keep the family together. In 1939, Mary married Donald Campbell, from nearby Stamford Centre. Don was in the army during the war, and stayed in afterwards-posted to Kingston, where they spent most of their married life. Mary enthusiastically participated in the community-helping in schools, charities, and service clubs and was an avid and competitive curler at Garrison club for many years. She was the commissioner of Girl Guides for Kingston district. After retirement, Mary and Don split their time between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Lake Seminole, Florida, returning to Kingston in 2005. Don died in 2011, after 71 years of marriage. At the time of her death, Mary was living at Rideaucrest Home, where she was a competitive dart and euchre player, golfer, curler and Wii bowler. Cremation has taken place. A burial service and celebration of Mary' s Life will be held later in Niagara Falls. Memorial donations to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation in Mary' s name would be appreciated by the family.
