When my husband, Jerry Godin, saw Doug's obituary in the Star, he told me about their friendship in high school back in Sault Ste Marie. It was clear back then that Doug was a very special person. After high school their paths crossed at the boat club but their career choices took them to different cities. I wish I had had a chance to meet Doug. He was certainly a fine person. Eleanor Godin

To the Hargreaves family, please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. I hope that you can take comfort in your memories of Doug and in the knowledge that he had a profound impact on thousands of young people. Throughout my career, I often found myself leaning on Doug s wisdom, his witticisms and his outlook on life be flexible and have a sense of humour is a wonderful adage to live ones life by. His impact on all of us, transcended the football field. Our prayers are with you. Ed and Hanna Kidd

Norma and family, Barb and myself send our deepest condolences on Doug's passing. I had the privilege of playing football for Doug at RMC in 1968-1970, and what a privilege it was. He was an incredibly professional and inspirational individual who had a very positive impact on me personally. Thank you Doug for being a leader and mentor for so many. Bill and Barb Brewer

Norma and Family, our deepest condolences for the loss of a true leader. Doug's impact on all those lucky enough to learn under him was immeasurable. He was all about integrity and we are all better people by having him as a role model in such an important stage in our lives. If a good life can be measured by having a positive impact on others, Doug lived truly a great life (must have made a good choice of parents). Mark and Trish Morrison

Doug was a great mentor to my son Nicholas who was on the Queen's football team in his first year at Queen's. I did know him except through hearing a lot about him from Nick, but I always felt grateful to him for his kindness and generosity of spirit, and his encouragement of Nick to whom he was an inspiration and very positive role model.

An amazing Canadian, an incredible coach and a remarkable human being. I never played for him but I was a cadet at Rmc where we all respected him deeply. We later were colleagues in the PE&R classification and he had a major impact on my attitudes and capabilities as a coach. Rest in peace Doug and thank you for impact my life in a very positive way.

My deepest sympathies to Norma and family.
Coach was a legend in our Queen's Football loving family. When I graduated in 1998, I became a ticket checker at Panorama Mountain Village. There, I had the good fortune of seeing Doug and Norma at the hill nearly every day. I enjoyed his great sense of humor and was in awe of his obvious love for Norma.
Few people truly leave such a remarkable legacy. He was one of a kind. I am grateful to have had the chance to cross paths with him.

Our deepest condolences to you Norma and those three wonderful women that we "baby sat" over fifty years ago. We have so many fond memories of time spent with the Hargeaves and we cherish greatly how Doug's guidance and direction influenced my life. As a life long friend of Ward I have acquired a "Big Brother"!
We regret that Judy's state of health and my older brother's placement in the local hospice will not allow us to get to Kingston to be with you.
Doug's life should be celebrated and always fondly remembered!
Love Dan and Judy Carmichael.

We are so glad we saw Doug awhile back when he was in KGH and were able to enjoy his sense of humour, even during a difficult time. Our visit with Norma reflected the loving bond she and Doug had during their 60 years of marriage. She is a pillar of strength. Our condolences to all the family during this sad time. Your memories will carry you through. Doug was such an accomplished, yet humble man and will always be remembered for his special influence in the lives of so many. Randy & Karen Edgeworth

Dear Norma, Vicki, Gayle, Lynn and family, as difficult as this journey has been for you it brings peace to know that your vigil has come to a close. Although the ordeal of your loss will be with you always celebrate the memories. Doug was a person who inspired us all. Although terrified of the larger than life, pensive, quiet man when a child, I grew to have tremendous respect for his personage. I am so grateful and blessed to have had him as my Uncle. Sincere condolance's from both of us. Michele and Beth

To the Hargreaves family, my sincere condolences to you for the loss of a great man and a true leader of men. I arrived at training camp in the Fall of 1988 as a young boy and graduated four years later as a man. During this time I learned the true lessons of teamwork, discipline and humility. On that first day I addressed him as Coach and he responded with "please call me Doug" Such a simple thing to make me feel respected and a part of the team. Thank you Doug for mentoring 19 years of Golden Gaels.
Sincerely, Dan Pawliw
